01 Jan Edson Barboza vs. Dan Ige in the works for May 16 UFC event
Former lightweight contender Edson Barboza is expected move down to 145 pounds for a fight against Dan Ige at the UFC’s May 16 event in Jacksonville, Fla.
Multiple sources confirmed verbal agreements are in place for the matchup when speaking to MMA Fighting. Combate initially reported the proposed bout.
As of now, contracts have not been issued. The UFC is scrambling to put together three upcoming cards on May 9, May 13 and May 16, so a lot of matchups have been made, but not finalized just yet.
Assuming it’s inked, Barboza will make the move down to featherweight for the first time after competing the bulk of his UFC career at 155 pounds. The Brazilian is 1-2 in his past three fights with losses to Paul Felder and Justin Gaethje as well as a TKO victory over Dan Hooker.
As for Ige, he comes into the fight with five consecutive wins, including a split decision in his most recent outing against Mirsad Bektic. Ige eagerly awaited the opportunity to move up the ranks, and now he’ll get a high-profile opponent on May 16.
The main event for the card is expected to be a heavyweight clash between Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris from the VyStar Arena in Jacksonville. No fans will be in attendance per safety protocols to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
