‘Jacare’ Souza releases statement on positive COVID-19 test, hopes to reschedule Uriah Hall fight

Ronaldo Souza is hoping that his battle with COVID-19 doesn’t keep him out of action for long.

The news broke that “Jacare” tested positive for the coronavirus last Friday, a day before he was supposed to fight Uriah Hall at UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Fla. Their bout was canceled, though the pay-per-view event proceeded as scheduled.

Souza, 40, commented on the cancellation and his hopes of fighting Hall in the future in a statement posted to Instagram.

I was very sad to not be able to fight at UFC 249, but I want you to know that, as soon as I’m medically cleared, I hope to reschedule my fight with Uriah Hall so that I can put on the show that everyone expects. I thank my corners for the partnership, my opponent for the words of support and the UFC for all the care. Thank you all for the kind messages I have received in the last few days. The upcoming weeks I will be secluded with my family and coaches and focused on our health so I can be back soon. Thank you!

According to a statement from the UFC, two of Souza’s cornermen also tested positive for COVID-19. All three men were deemed to be asymptomatic and the promotion said they “followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible.”

Souza and his cornermen were the only positive tests reported from the fight week for UFC 249.
