Joanne Calderwood throws shade at Jessica Eye for UFC on ESPN 10 weight miss, ‘curtain pinch’

When Jessica Eye came in 0.25 pounds heavy ahead of the UFC on ESPN 10 main event, fellow flyweight Joanne Calderwood was ready.

Eye, a former women’s flyweight title challenger, missed weight for the second consecutive time on Friday as she prepares to face Cynthia Calvillo at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. “Evil” will still compete on Saturday despite looking worse for wear on the scale but forfeits 25-percent of her purse to Calvillo, per the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Moments after Eye missed weight, Calderwood responded via Twitter—even claiming there was possible tomfoolery involved with the hoop.

Oh they still letting the girls away with the curtain pinch?? pic.twitter.com/lKd5NDymhk

As the dust was beginning to settle, Eye gave an update on her health—along with an explanation for the weight miss—on social media.

… 2.5 weeks notice and one hell of time of life we are living in . I am so proud of all the fighter that’s took these fights last min to give the world something positive to enjoy . I want to thanks everyone… https://t.co/3Nf66CY9tS

As expected, MMA fans—as they are known to do in these types of situations—weren’t very kind towards Eye. One fan in particular gave Calvillo props for making weight in the short notice time slot despite moving up a weight class from the strawweight division, which lead to a response from the top-ranked 125-pounder.

Exactly also a 115 coming up who has also miss weight in class on a much higher level . See you just want to be a hater and rude. .25 of pound I am extremely proud https://t.co/IePDNxRzHd

Following that tweet, “Bad MoFo” reinserted herself into the conversation, thus leading to a back-and-forth between the two.

Was it really .25 because I’ve heard from multiple people that you were 4lbs over 15 mins before you actually weighed in. Main event spot or not if you know your not gonna make it don’t take the fight. #banthetoweltrick pic.twitter.com/nTLwWdbnlF

Sorry jo jo you want to fuel these people. I would wish you all the best but not I can see your just instagator https://t.co/YitNyWD0Yh

I was ready to make weight at the start of this week..I’m staying ready but not earning right now so this was tough for me to see..but also I just want better for the sport and I don’t like that they are still not making us put our hands above the hoop. Good luck for tomorrow!

@DRkneevil your comical Jo jo, you play this sweet, incident person. You are as fake as the act you put on. Make sure to don’t play nice when see me at the @UFCPI. if you don’t want to take a fight in the octagon because you scare let set up gym fight your gym right by my house

— Jessica Eye (@jessicaevileye) June 12, 2020

Crazy how you went the internet to try to recruit people . crazy because you could have had this conversation with me private but you prove to show how fake you are with this sweet girl attitude . Thanks for reminding me who you really are for second I kinda thought your were https://t.co/OfWKxGGdon

In the end, Calderwood believes she said her peace and, perhaps, cooler heads prevailed in the end.

I ain’t paying attention to that and to be honest I’m sure you are getting heat but I haven’t seen any of it.. I just wanted to get my piece in about the hoop and what I heard..it’s been happening for too long now it is time for a change. Sorry if you are offended by my tweet.

Calderwood looks to be next in line to challenge Valentina Shevchenko for the women’s flyweight title. The bout was originally scheduled to take place June 6 before Shevchenko was forced to withdraw with a leg injury. With the COVID-19 pandemic creating havoc around the world, the bout may have been postponed regardless.

As of now, the UFC has yet to announce a date for the championship fight to be rebooked.
