01 Jan Josh Emmett vs. Shane Burgos in the works for June 20 UFC event
Now that Shane Burgos is in the top-10 of the UFC’s featherweight division, he wants the opportunity to climb even higher.
He will get that chance next month when he takes on Josh Emmett June 20.
Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed the booking to MMA Fighting following an initial report from ESPN.
In a recent appearance on MMA Fighting’s What the Heck, “Hurricane” revealed that he had something in the works and expected a fight to be announced “in the next week or two.”
“(The location) I have no clue about,” Burgos said. “I don’t even give a f*ck at this point. I don’t care where it’s at.”
Emmett enters the contest with back-to-back knockout victories over Michael Johnson and and Mirsad Bektic. Prior to a second-round TKO loss to Jeremy Stephens in February 2018, the Team Alpha Male product picked up consecutive wins over Felipe Arantes and Ricardo Lamas.
Following a 10-fight winning streak to begin his pro career, including victories in his first three UFC bouts, Burgos suffered his first loss in against Calvin Kattar in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC 220. The Tiger Shullmann’s product bounced back from the third-round TKO loss with three straight victories over Kurt Holobaugh, Cub Swanson and, most recently, Makwan Amirkhani at UFC 244.
A consummate company guy, Burgos feels his resume leads him into looking ahead in the rankings of a fascinating 145-pound division.
“We all do at this point,” Burgos explained. “I earned my ranking when I beat Cub and just fought Makwan who wasn’t ranked. I was like, ‘You know what? I just got my ranking, I’m not gonna sit here and be like I’ll fight him, I’ll fight him.’ That’s the guy I got? Fine. I’ll defend my ranking.
“Now I’m at the point where I’m like, give me somebody ahead of me. Give me that opportunity. I’m No. 10, so I want to fight one of these top-10 guys.”
