Sean O’Malley jab at Cody Garbrandt starts Twitter sparring session

Bantamweight standout Sean O’Malley wasn’t cheering Cody Garbrandt’s push for a flyweight title shot against Deiveson Figueiredo.

Since his fourth octagon win, a highlight-reel knockout over Eddie Wineland, O’Malley had turned up the heat on the ex-champ on social media and was undoubtedly laying the groundwork for a fight. So when Garbrandt told ESPN.com about his plan to drop to 125 pounds, he wasn’t too happy – and there was no better place to express that than on Twitter.

Here’s how it started.

Naturally, Garbrandt wasn’t thrilled to have his flyweight coming-out party spoiled by a young upstart, and so began a sparring session.

Don’t worry kid I’ll be running both divisions by 2021 hopefully by that time you’ll fight someone in the top 15…. https://t.co/SBD9f4WoKv

I hope you don’t get knocked out at strawweight because it won’t look as good when I knock you out. Good luck. https://t.co/5qdLq6L0oH

Hopefully you don’t have to get carried out of the cage like a bitch again… good luck https://t.co/IjI13HWXkC

You ain’t chasing greatness you are running from it.

O’Malley does have somewhere else to focus his energy, thankfully. In two weeks, he takes on Marlon Vera, a tough bantamweight who’s repeatedly targeted him on social media. He’s eager to get the last word on that one.

Last hard sparring. Wish the fight was next weekend. Ready to Deleteo El Chito. #codysucks https://t.co/gLV1EyNNbd
