01 Jan UFC on ESPN 8 results: Song Yadong remains unbeaten in the UFC following war with Marlon Vera
It didn’t come easy but Song Yadong remained perfect in the Octagon with a win over Marlon Vera to kick off the main card at UFC on ESPN 8.
A prospect training out of Team Alpha Male, Song used a fast counter striking game to get the better of Vera during many of their exchanges on the feet, although it was a back-and-forth war throughout all three rounds. Ultimately, the judges all scored the fight 29-28 for Song, who moves to 5-0-1 in the UFC.
“I did all I could do right now,” Song said after taking the fight on short notice. “I was prepared for three rounds. My opponent was a really good fighter.”
It was truly a battle between a pair of bantamweights moving up to featherweight for one night only, Song appeared to be a little faster with his striking, which led to many of his best shots connecting on target. While Vera was constantly moving forward, it was Song who countering with stiffer punches and still finding a home for his kicks to the legs as well.

With seconds remaining in the fight, Vera dragged Song into a grappling exchange that saw the fighters scrambling for position, looking to score points with the judges after a razor-close fight throughout
While the decision could have just as easily gone the other way, it was Song who got the nod as he extends his overall unbeaten streak to nine fights in a row.
