01 Jan UFC Vegas 6 live blog: Derrick Lewis vs. Aleksei Oleinik
This is the UFC Vegas 6 live blog for Derrick Lewis vs. Aleksei Oleinik, the heavyweight headliner for Saturday’s fight card at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.
Lewis and Oleinik both have won their past two fights; Lewis won decisions over Ilir Latifi and Blagoy Ivanov, and Oleinik submitted Maurice Greene before outpointing ex-champ Fabricio Werdum.

Round 1: Lewis comes out swinging, landing a head kick and a flurry of punches before driving Oleinik to the fence. Oleinik gets underhooks and gets literally tossed back to the cage and to the floor. Lewis starts wailing on him and then assumes top position, trying to take mount and Oleinik tries to make himself scarce on bottom. Oleinik wraps the head, and Lewis settles into half-guard. Oleinik trying to find an angle for a choke. But the instead finds a way up and then grabs a leg for a takedown. In judo side control, he isolates the head for a choke, but misses the head, and Lewis rights himself and pounds away with punches. Herb Dean warns for back of the head, and again, Oleinik finds a way to get another takedown. Another choke attempt from judo side control, and Lewis is trying like crazy to keep space with his arms. Oleinik squeezing with all his might, and Lewis is trying to squirm away with short time. Oleinik gives up the scarf hold and returns to side control, where he attacks with a keylock with short time. Lewis survives, and we go to the second round.
MMA Fighting scores the frame 10-9 for Oleinik.
Round 2: Lewis leaps in with a knee to the chest and a right hand that connects, and Oleinik drops to the canvas. Oleinik manages to grab a leg and hangs on for dear life. But as Lewis continues to pound, it’s clear that Oleinik is no longer intelligently defending himself, and Dean steps in to stop the fight.
